Queen Maxima's China Tour Cut Short Due To Kidney Infection

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands is recuperating in the hospital after falling ill during an official visit to China.

The 44 year old monarch cut her trip short to China and was taken to Bronovo Hospital in The Hague on Wednesday morning. Doctors in the medical facility are said to be giving her treatment for a kidney infection, back pain and fever.

"I've seen pictures, I've talked to her," her husband, King Willem-Alexander, confirmed to the reporters accompanying the royal party in Shanghai. "She's doing well."

Willem-Alexander became king in 2013. Since the Royal couple ascended the throne, they have always traveled for state visits together. "I am proud of her, she really tried," the King said, as per Dutch newspaper Telegraaf. "We thought it was the flu. But it turned out to be a kidney infection."

But despite the continuing medical treatment she's been receiving the Queen's condition is said to be deteriorating, "We're waiting for more test results from the hospital," King Willem-Alexander said. "I hope she's back home soon."

Willem-Alexander has now completed the program with the Chinese officials and he flew right away to be with his wife. In a personal message King Willem-Alexander tweeted, "Many thanks for all the wishes for a speedy recovery. I will pass them on to my wife."

The Argentinian-born queen is the most popular member of the House of Orange. Before falling ill the mother of three attended Monday night's state banquet in Beijing.

Alongside her husband, 150 Dutch trade delegates and numerous Chinese guest, Maxima maintained her poise and showed no signs of discomfort as she toasted Chinese President Xi Jinping and other pillar of societies, PEOPLE reported.

Since Willem-Alexander took over the crown after the abdication of his mother, Queen Beatrix, Queen Maxima is the first Dutch queen consort since 1890.
