The last season of "Game of Thrones" saw the series catching up with its literary source material, namely George R. R. Martin's books of "A Song of Ice and Fire," and it seems like eager fans waiting for big answers (such as "is Jon Snow alive?") might have to wait a little bit longer for the "Game of Thrones" season 6.
This week, HBO announced that their newest drama (which has people like Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger and Terence Winter behind it), "Vinyl," will be premiering on February, which will likely push back the release date of the "Game of Thrones" season 6.
Watchers on the Wall, a fansite dedicated to both Martin's books as well as the HBO series, theorizes that there may be another reason for the "Game of Thrones" season 6 to be pushed back a few weeks: the show's producers might be waiting for the highly anticipated release of Martin's sixth book, "Winds of Winter."
Vanity Fair reports that considering the fact that there have been a huge amount of clues regarding the book's release, it's more than likely that it's one of the reasons the "Game of Thrones" season 6 will be pushed back.
Because of scheduling conflicts with other HBO shows like the aforementioned "Vinyl" as well as "TOGETHERNESS" and Lena Dunham's "Girls," it seems like the "Game of Thrones" season 6 will premiere later in the year than it ever has, with an April 24 date being the earliest possible option.
Polygon reached out to HBO representatives and they're keeping mum so far about release dates for the period fantasy show, saying there's no official start date as of yet, but if the show wants its coveted Sunday 9pm release, it won't come earlier than April 24.
Will pushing back the "Game of Thrones" season 6 make it possible for the book's release to catch up?
