Playing Video Games Can Treat Children Suffering From ADHD, Study Claims

According to a new study, children who are suffering from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) can be remedied by letting them play video games.

ADHD is one of the increasing psychiatric disorders nowadays among children. The said disorder can cause a child some difficulty in paying attention and concentrating. A new research which was led by the scientists at Akili Interactive Labs which is a startup video game company in North Carolina stated that videogame can really help fight the neurodevelopmental illness.

The pilot study was conducted by examining 80 children aging from 8 to 12 in which fifty percent of them are suffering from ADHD. The experiment is quite simple; the patients were allowed to play videogames for 30 minutes a day in order to see the difference.

The result shows that patients who were involved in video gaming improved their memory and attention levels. The parents of the patients also observed the said positive outcomes.

Earlier this year, Matt Omernick told NPR that videogame can be a really good help in fighting the psychiatric disorder.

"We've been through eight or nine completed clinical trials, in all cognitive disorders: ADHD, autism, depression. The qualities of a good video game, things that hook you, what makes the brain -- snap -- engage and go, could be a perfect vessel for actually delivering medicine," said by the executive creative director at Akili.

As what Reuters had reported, Akili is currently developing a treatment game, named Project Evo. The said therapeutic game aims to enhance the cognitive skills of children who are suffering from different childhood disorders including ADHD and other neurodevelopmental disease.

The said video game will task a player to direct a certain character to a river. While doing the job, the player is also making some decisions about different objects appearing on the display.

According to statistics, cases of ADHD patients in the United States have increase to 9.5 percent for the last few decades.
