Man Eats Food From Dumpster To Highlight Issue on Food Waste

Would you eat trash to prove a point?

According to FOX News, a San Diego resident took the saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure," to a new level in an attempt to spread awareness about the amount of food that's wasted by the United States.

Rob Greenfield, an environmental activist, told reporters he will be eating all of his meals from dumpsters. The 27-year-old has filled his refrigerator with about $200 worth of items, such as fruits and vegetables, all collected from the local supermarket dumpsters.

"Some people will call it nasty, it's just a matter of perspective," the 27-year-old told FOX News in San Diego.

This summer, Greenfield traveled across America on his bicycle. While on his journey, he ate 280 pounds of food from various dumpsters.

According a study from the Natural Resources Defense Council, Americans and grocery stores, throw away roughly $165 billion worth of food every year. Based on a survey by the Food Marketing Institute, 9 out of 10 Americans to throw away food needlessly.

Natural Resources Defense Council, stated that due to uncertainty about the different labels including "best by," "use by," and "best before", customers are wasting food that has not actually gone bad.

"The date labeling system in the U.S. is not a system at all. It is a mess," said Dana Gunder, food and agriculture staff scientist for the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Greenfield will be hosting a dinner party on Friday, with meals made completely from trash.

"It's a classy affair, so come looking good and ready for some delicious dumpster food," said Greenfield, who posted the event on his Facebook page.
