Things are not looking so sunny for ABC's "Good morning America".

After 25 years on ABC, weatherman Sam Champion is leaving the morning show to work for The Weather Channel.

ABC News President, Ben Sherwood, announced Monday that Champion would be moving on to become an "on-air face" for The Weather Channel. Champion's new position includes serving as a host and managing editor.

Sherwood sent a memo to staffers on Monday morning, highlighting some of Champion's credentials and accomplishments, which included the weatherman's coverage during Superstorm Sandy being responsible for the morning show receiving the Peabody Award for coverage of the historic storm.

"Over the years at GMA, Sam has broadcast more than 1,800 weather forecasts," Sherwood listed. "He has traveled to almost every major weather event in the U.S."

After 18 years with ABC's New York City affiliate, Champion joined "GMA" in 2006. Champion said he was leaving for what he called calls "a once in a lifetime opportunity." Meteorologist Ginger Zee will be replacing Champion, moving from the weekends to weekdays.

Zee expressed her excitement online about her new position at "GMA," as well.

Champion's last day on "Good Morning America" will be Wednesday, Dec. 4.
