'Suicide Squad' Update: Jared Leto Graces Empire Magazine Cover As The Joker, And People Are Going Nuts [VIDEO]

The world will need to wait for more than half a year before Jared Leto would unleash the full insanity of The Joker in 'Suicide Squad,' but there have been glimpses and clues to just how crazy the new Clown Prince of Crime will be in the David Ayer movie.

After all, the cast of 'Suicide Squad' have admitted that they are terrified of Jared Leto's onscreen persona and Will Smith has even said that he has only met The Joker because the Academy Award winner remained in character throughout their filming.

It looks like Empire magazine is taking their new issue into a new level by featuring Jared Leto as The Joker on the cover. The image shows a full body shot of the character wearing a loud purple coat with a matching cane, dark sweatpants with the Arkham Asylum logo and bare feet. The words "Psycho" and "Killer" are printed randomly around him.

Naturally, everyone just went crazy over the picture. People tweeted about The Joker's scary new look and io9 called it "sort of a hot mess," adding that it may represent the villain's "general hot-messiness." The guys from Collider Movie Talk loved the crazy look, calling Jared Leto "probably the most dangerous Joker we'll have on screen."

The general consensus about The Joker's new look seems to be "horrifying, but in a good way because I'm excited about the movie," and David Ayer wouldn't have it any other way. The 'Suicide Squad' director revealed in the Empire interview that even he is terrified of Jared Leto.

"The Joker is the third rail of comic book movies," he said. "There's a power to that character, and by some freaking miracle, through the incredible things Jared has done and the photography and all the other millions of things that went into it, we've cooked up something transcendent. He's scary."

Catch Jared Leto as The Joker in 'Suicide Squad,' which hits theaters on August 5, 2016.
