Remember the "300 Sandwiches" lady and her blog?
New York Post's Page Six reporter Stephanie Smith is turning her humorous blog into a book after signing with Random House's new imprint, Zinc Ink, headed by David Zinczenko and Stephen Perrine.
"Steve and I are both longtime friends of Stephanie from her days covering the magazine business for Women's Wear Daily," said Zinczenko, a longtime editor-in-chief of Men's Health. "So when she told us about her romantic, passionate, and very funny quest to make her boyfriend 300 sandwiches, our first reaction was, 'That's a book.'"
The blog chronicled Smith's attempt to make 300 sandwiches for her boyfriend, Eric Schulte, in order to get an engagement ring.
"As he finished that last bite, he made an unexpected declaration of how much he loved me and that sandwich: 'Honey, you're 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring!" Smith wrote.
Smith said she ran with her boyfriend's comment and started an anonymous blog, aptly titled "300 Sandwiches," where she has been writing about her quest to get a ring. She also wrote about her reasoning for starting the blog,
"Maybe I needed to show him I could cook to prove that I am wife material," she wrote. "If he wanted 300 sandwiches, I'd give him 300 sandwiches, and I'd blog about it."
After the story initially broke, Smith said she received a lot of negative feedback for her decision to go through with making the sandwiches. The idea, along with her boyfriend have both been called sexist and degrading to women.
She has since written a follow-up article, called, "It's a blog, not a 'which hunt!" in which she backtracks, calling the whole thing a "lighthearted joke."
"300 is a fun, creative project for both of us. We both started from an obviously tongue-firmly-planted-in-cheek joke," Schulte reportedly said. "I find it nothing short of hilarious and kind of sad that so many people missed that!"
Smith said Tuesday, she was at 197 sandwiches. The book, which was brokered by William Morris Endeavor, is due out around Valentine's Day, 2015, according to the Post.
