Last week, Tesla officially rolled out the much awaited autopilot feature as part of its version 7.0 software update. The new patch gives Tesla cars sold after October 2014 a host of self-driving abilities such as lane switching, parallel parking, and basic obstacle evasion.
Early feedback reveals there are still some kinks that need to be worked out; which is expected of such a groundbreaking and radical feature.
In his review for The Guardian, writer Ed Zitron says that the current iteration of Autopilot is perfectly fine for freeway driving but is still a work-in-progress in urban settings.
'If you're driving around the city, I can't imagine this being very useful, as the car can't turn a corner in an urban environment.' He writes. 'However, if you're driving along the highway, this car will happily do your job better than you do. This includes in stop-start traffic, where the car excels in removing the most frustrating part of driving.'
Tesla does state that Autopilot, as it currently stands, should only be used in highway scenarios. They also warn users not to take their hands off the wheel; stating that "The driver is still responsible for, and ultimately in control of, the car."
This hasn't stopped some drivers from defying orders and posting the results online.
A YouTube user by name of RockTreeStar uploaded a video which shows him using autopilot in a sub-optimal setting.
The short 14 second clip shows him driving his Tesla SP90D down a rather narrow two lane road. Towards the end, we can hear warning beeps start to sound as the car nearly collides with an oncoming vehicle. The driver quickly grabs control of the wheel and rights the car's course.
'My car apparently thought the oncoming car was supposed to be followed, and suddenly veered to the left, crossing the double-yellow road divider line right into its path. Had I not reacted quickly to jerk the steering wheel in the opposite direction, a devastating head-on collision would have occurred.' Writes the user in the video description.
We think it's best you listen to Tesla for now.
