'Clock Student' Ahmed Mohamed Accepts Scholarship From Qatar

Ahmed Mohamed, the fourteen-year-old Muslim-American boy from Irving, Texas, who was arrested last month after his teacher mistook his homemade clock for an explosive device, has just accepted a scholarship offer from Qatar.

The Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development offered the budding inventor a full scholarship for his secondary and undergraduate education and he and family have just announced that they are accepting it. Mohamed will be placed in the country's 'Young Innovators Program.'

"After careful consideration of all the generous offers received, we would like to announce that we have accepted a kind offer from Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF) for Ahmed to join the prestigious QF Young Innovators Program, which reflects the organization's on-going dedication to empowering young people and fostering a culture of innovation and creativity," Reads the official news release published in the Washington Post.

The family was also grateful for the support they received during the incident, which included well wishes from the likes of President Obama, Mark Zuckerberg, and Hilary Clinton.

"Our family has been overwhelmed by the many offers of support we have received since the unfortunate incident of Ahmed's arrest, from the White House to Sudan, to Mecca, we have been welcomed by a variety of individuals, businesses and educational institutions."

Ahmed himself spoke highly of the country, which he visited last month.

"Qatar was a cool place to visit. I loved the city of Doha because it's so modern. I saw so many amazing schools there, many of them campuses of famous American universities, the teachers were great. I think I will learn a lot and have fun too."'

Ahmed became the center of a heated debate last month when numerous voices in the media and around the web accused the school and local law enforcement of treating him too harshly because of his religion and ethnicity. The hashtag '#IStandWithAhmed' became a viral sensation with many claiming the arrest was clear case of racial profiling.

Officials at Ahmed's school stand by their decision saying that the safety of the students was their only priority.
