Government Shutdown: D.C. Restaurants Respond to Government's Freeze With Freebies

As the government shutdown moves into day three, restaurants in Washington D.C. are getting involved.

According to the Huffington Post, many eateries have been coming up with deals for furloughed employees. A few eateries are charging lawmakers more for food and drinks.

At the Daily Dish in Silver Spring, Md., furloughed government employees get free coffee. But "members of Congress pay double," as stated on a sign posted outside the restaurant. Daily Dish co-owner Zena Polin told The Huffington Post on Wednesday, that no one from Congress has yet to come in and pay the extra cost.

"We've had such great feedback," Polin said.

D.C.'s Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe is offering happy hour to all customers except elected officials in the House and Senate.

While some restaurants are charging Capitol Hill lawmakers, a growing number of restaurants and pubs are offering promotions to provide federal employees with complementary products and services to help lessen the economic impact of the recent government shutdown. Among the offerings are free beer and burgers and discounted food.

Jose Andres Sandwiches will offer free sandwiches every afternoon during the shutdown to everyone that comes in and can show a government ID. Z-Burger (hamburgers), Pork Barrel BBQ (barbecue) and Sophie's Cuban D.C. (Cuban food) will also offer their respective fares for free to hungry federal workers, according to ABC News.

The New York Daily News, at least 8,000 federal employees have been effected on Tuesday night after lawmakers failed to reach a resolution regarding government funding.
