Family-friendly restaurant, La Fisheria has banned children under the age of eight after 7 p.m.
The Houston-based seafood restaurant, announced its new polity on Monday with a statement on its Facebook page:
"LA FISHERIA AFTER 7:00PM
After 7:00 pm, people over eight years old only.
For your understanding,
Thank you. We are a family friendly restaurant, and we also respect all of our customers so we introduce this new policy to the restaurant. Thanks for your understanding."
Local news station KHOU 11 spoke with Mexican reality TV star and executive chef of "La Fisheria," Aquiles Chavez, about the decision behind the new policy and how it might affect business. Chavez told the station that too many customers have complained about "noisy and rowdy" kids overtaking the restaurant.
He said the decision came over the weekend and called the decision "tough" but necessary to please customers.
"We find children that are crying, some kids running under tables, and our customers don't like," Chavez told KHOU 11. "Seven o'clock is not a time for children, especially when we serve drinks and wine."
Chavez believes the new policy will help improve business. He said patrons will now be able to eat out in peace. When children do eat at the restaurant they're offered a separate menu.
The Civil Rights Act, does not include any terms on banning children, but it does make it illegal to discriminate on the basis of religion and race. According to the Huffington Post, businesses have the right to refuse children.
In 2011, a Pittsburgh restaurant banned kids under the age of six.
For people who missed the social media message, the restaurant has also placed a sign on their door that states the policy, according to the Huffington Post. The policy went into full effect on Tuesday.
