McDonald's President and CEO Don Thompson offered hints during a recent interview that the company is considering serving its breakfast menu all day long.
During a recent interview with CNBC. McDonald's CEO Don Thompson, when asked about the idea of serving up a McMuffin or a Sausage Burrito at dinner time, said: "Yes we would consider it." He added that McDonald's was working on "innovative ways of us expanding the breakfast hours, and some of those things we'll be seeing here in the near future."
"We have looked at breakfast across the day," he said, adding that an all-day breakfast menu could be rolled out "in the near future."
The company is also experimenting with delivery services in in some countries "in a big way," as well as in densely populated areas in the U.S. Thompson said that "delivery is a big, big opportunity, particularly in areas where you don't have drive-throughs."
The move comes after the company announced lackluster first quarter earnings and a decline in same-store sales. The company is seeking a way to increase revenues and bring in more customers.
Some analysts have blamed the chain's emphasis on its Dollar Menu for the dip. With rising commodity prices, it's tough to eke out profits from $1 burgers.
"When they decided on a 10:30am cut off, it was because they wanted a clean break," said Leslie Kerr, founder of restaurant pricing advisory firm Intellaprice, according to Forbes. "The intent was more for operational ease. But it's not so operationally different to offer, say, a burger or a McMuffin at noon."
She added: "One of the breakfast offerings is steak, egg and cheese on a bagel. That just sounds like a burger to me."
