Why is Matt Damon Being Accused of Insensitivity?

The Martian actor Matt Damon gave a black, female film producer (Effie Brown) an amount of teaching in diversity, however the actor is being slammed on the internet right now for this and most likely a whole lot more of the population is not pleased with what Matt Damon had to say on diversity.

On the Television Series Project Greenlight's season four premiere, first-time filmmakers are given the possibility to direct their first feature film. A group of producers, including Damon, Ben Affleck and Effie Brown (who produced the American drama film - Dear White People) talked about which director they wanted to work on the film.

The nominee for Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature - Effie Brown, verbalized her concern about how the director might deal with the only black character in the film - Harmony, a streetwalker who gets hit by a white man who manages her in the flesh trade.

The Bourne Identity actor interrupted Effie Brown, by saying that they should take hold of a director based on merit, rather than diversity. Matt Damon then went about giving Effie Brown his opinion on how diversity works in Hollywood.

But Matt Damon said, "When we're discussing about diversity, you perform it in the casting of the film, not in the casting of the show," Effie Brown's reply was a simple, "Wow. Okay." She obviously didn't want to engage him into any arguments.

Then Twitter users reacted with a strong feeling of annoyance and posted the hashtag #Damonsplaining

The American blogger and campaigner for the Progressive Change Campaign Committee - Zaid Jilani posted on his Twitter account this, "Matt Damon is one of the most left wing movie stars, he has been on the front lines of all sorts of anti racist work it's not even amusing."

And despite the tension surrounding the conversation about the certain topic, Effie Brown tried to consider the incident in a positive way, as Brown posted on her Twitter account, "Thank you for watching the show and getting a great conversation started."
