Last year, the film that introduced Julie Andrews to the world and earned the actress her only Academy Award turned 50 years of age, and months later, "Mary Poppins" 2015 is very much alive, as Walt Disney Studios is planning a revival of the beloved musical.
Two years ago, Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks starred in "Saving Mr. Banks," a film recounting the many bumps in the road that led to the original 1964 film, but it seems like Disney's not satisfied with only bringing the film back tangentially, as a "Mary Poppins" 2015 sequel is currently in the works.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the "Mary Poppins" 2015 project will be a new all-original musical, and Disney has reportedly gotten the team from last year's "Into the Woods" for the film, including director Rob Marshall and producers Marc Plat and John DeLuca.
While the "Mary Poppins" 2015 project will not be treated as a direct sequel to the 1964 classic, it will cover territory from P.L. Travers' original stories that wasn't adapted in the original film, as the upcoming project will be set approximately 20 years after the story starring Andrews in Depression-era London.
Vanity Fair reports that the "Mary Poppins" 2015 project is currently in the very early stages of production, with David Magee (from "Life of Pi" and "Finding Neverland") attached to write the project while songwriting duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (responsible for "Hairspray") will be the ones making new music for the film, with the full support of Richard Sherman, the remaining living composer of the songwriting duo that brought classics like "Chim Chim Cher-ee" and "'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" to popular culture.
According to Time Magazine, Travers' estate is collaborating with the studio in bringing the new adaptations to life, as the score and songs are being written.
There's still no official confirmation from Disney regarding the "Mary Poppins" 2015 project.
