Sharon Jones was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer back in 2013. She fought the disease through chemotherapy and invasive surgery.
During the premiere of her new documentary entitled, 'Barbara Kopple's Miss Sharon Jones!' which is about beating cancer and the impact of the disease on her band, she announced that her cancer is back.
As she took the stage, the soul singer announced the sad news at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday. "I start chemo on Wednesday," Jones said in front of the crowd, The Toronto Star reported.
But though she found out that she's battling cancer again, she's still in high spirit declaring that, "I'm gonna keep fighting. We got a long way to go."
"I'm going to do what I have to do. I'm going to sing," she said, suggesting that her diagnosis won't stop her from singing again. And she promised her fans that she will give them want they want.
Her oncologist, Dr. James Leonardo, joined her on stage and spoke of her inspiring outlook. Acknowledging the singer's battle, he said, "People ask me how I can do what I do." He added, "This is how," referring to Jones.
Back in 2014, Jones opened up about her previous battle with cancer. She admitted that she was fighting against pins-and-needles sensation. She also vented about the high cost of the treatment.
"Poor people should be charged even less!' People are dying! They are letting people die! It's sad. The doctors in the hospital will not operate on you. They will not take you. And so you're just going to die," she said during an interview with Rolling Stone.
She also revealed to the media outlet that her main goal of her return is to be recognized in the music industry. She said that she's been performing for 19 years, but still, many people don't know her and she wants to be identified as a talented music artist.
