Can Vitamin D Really Promote Weight Loss?

Approximately 69% of American adults are overweight or obese, according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). Study reveals that obesity is fast becoming a problem even with children. In the past 30 years, the prevalence of obesity among children has doubled.

The troubling data has caused numerous medical practitioners to find possible solution to stop the increasing number of obese people. There is even an ongoing argument that multivitamins, including vitamin D can provide solution to the disturbing problem.

An Italian team led by Luisella Vigna of the University of Milan said that Vitamin D deficiency may put people at risk of obesity and other obesity related complications.

The team gathered data from 400 overweight people with Vitamin D deficiency. Based on the figures, the team noted "obese and overweight people with vitamin D deficiency, who were given vitamin D supplementation" show significant weight loss and enhances the "beneficial effects of a reduced-calorie diet."

Hence, researchers suggested that obese and overweight people should have their D vitamin levels tested.

However, Seema Kumar, a pediatric endocrinologist said that vitamin D is not the solution to the increasing problem. It will only provide health benefits to people but losing weight is not among them.

In a span of 10 years, Kumar boosted vitamin D to children. After series of tests, he said that an increase of D supplements in the human body doesn't change the mass of the body, including BMI, waistlines, and blood pressures.

Kumar also added that although his research contradicts previous claims that an increase of vitamin D can help in weight loss. He is optimistic that other researchers will further investigate on this and prove him wrong .

Every year, obese people are increasing in number. Medical practitioners and health enthusiast are doubling their efforts to solve this problem. They believe that the best way to cut statistics is to have a healthy diet and do regular exercise , Daily Time Gazette reported.
