The largest snack food corporation, Mondelez International (formerly Kraft Foods) has called for sustainable practices at this year's Gulfood 2013. Held at the Dubai World Trade Centre, the gathering brings global food leaders together for policy and business.
Vishal Tikku, area manager in the Middle East and Africa for Mondelez, highlighted the need for sustainability as well as security. His talk was particularly poignant in the UAE, where 90 percent of the food is imported. It is also a key player in the trade market for the region.
Tikku said that "40 percent of the earth's land" goes to farming, as well as 70 percent of freshwater. And those numbers are only growing.
He used the time to also highlight the "Cocoa Life" program run by Mondelez, which helps "farmers, their families and communities" to make a living while farming cocoa sustainably.
The conference runs from February 25-28 in Dubai.
