'Supernatural' Star Jensen Ackles Talks About Battling The Darkness In Season 11, Reveals The Villain Is A Female!

The entire tenth season of 'Supernatural' was a hard look at how Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) struggled with the Mark of Cain, so it was obviously a relief to see him finally rid of the awful scar. However, the disintegration of the Mark of Cain also meant that the evil force known as the Darkness has been unleashed onto the world.

But what exactly is the Darkness?

[SPOILERS AHEAD]

Jensen Ackles was more than happy to tell Entertainment Weekly a little bit more about the new big bad Sam and Dean Winchester will need to tackle in the eleventh season of 'Supernatural.'

"As of right now we have it built as one specific entity, obviously that would be a character that we're introducing," Ackles said. "But whatever the reach of that character, what that character can do, we're not quite sure of."

He also added, "We don't know the scope of her powers."

That's right. The Darkness is a female adversary who is just as powerful as God himself. And since her existence pre-dates God, nobody knows for certain how to defeat her.

"This one's interesting because it's not really a monster," Ackles continued. "It's more of a primal force that we know nothing about. There's no lore; there's no guidebook; there's no instruction manual on how to deal with this."

Although this seems like a hopeless situation, Jared Padalecki, who plays Dean's brother Sam, has previously addressed the possibility of getting some help from upstairs.

"I think [the Darkness] certainly opens the door for Lucifer and/or God to pop up," he said. "We're certainly going back to that and going a bit more biblical and having our take on the writings that didn't make it into the Bible."

Find out if God swoops in to save Sam and Dean Winchester one more time when the eleventh season of 'Supernatural' premieres on The CW on October 7.
