'War Of The Planet Of The Apes' Update: 'East Los High' Star Gabriel Chavarria Cast As Human Protagonist

The apocalyptic sequel 'War of the Planet of the Apes' may be all about the monkeys, but the film will still need a few humans just to get the fight started.

According to Deadline, 'East Los High' star Gabriel Chavarria has just been chosen to play one of the human heroes in 'War of the Planet of the Apes.' The young actor will be one of two non-simian leads in the movie, although it was unclear whether the second human has already joined the project.

Gabriel Chavarria made his film debut in the 2007 Richard LaGravenese film 'Freedom Writers,' where he starred opposite Hilary Swank. He was later featured in the movie 'A Better Life' with Demián Bichir before landing the lead role in the Hulu drama series 'East Los High.' Chavarria's next project is the Melissa Benoist film 'Low Riders,' which also stars Eva Longoria, Theo Rossi and Cress Williams.

The title for the highly-anticipated sequel has been a topic of several debates before it was finally announced by Collider in May. 'War of the Planet of the Apes' is believed to have been chosen as the title because of the inevitable events that will happen following the climax of 'Dawn.'

In an interview with Slashfilm, director Matt Reeves discussed the future for Caesar (Andy Serkis).

"As this story continues, we know that war is not avoided by the end of 'Dawn,'' Reeves said. "That is going to take us into the world of what he is grappling with, where he is going to be thrust into circumstances that he never, ever wanted to deal with, and was hoping he could avoid."

Matt Reeves also hinted that 'War of the Planet of the Apes' will be difficult for Caesar. "The things that happen in that story test him in huge ways, in the ways in which his relationship with Koba haunts him deeply," he said. "It's going to be an epic story."

'War of the Planet of the Apes' is scheduled for release on July 14, 2017.
