Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Alien’ Isn’t Top Priority, Fox Wants ‘Prometheus 2’ Before Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley Return

Although science fiction fans couldn't be more excited at the prospect of Neill Blomkamp's "Alien" sequel starring legend Sigourney Weaver, in fact the studio behind it isn't marking it as a top priority when it comes to shooting, as 20th Century Fox is actually insisting that the sequel to 2012's "Prometheus" be shot first.

It was only a few months ago that Neill Blomkamp's "Alien" sequel was even announced, after the "District 9" creator had posted a few photos of a possible project that went viral and fans of the saga fell in love with - and support for the project grew even further when Weaver was confirmed along with Michael Biehn.

Now, according to Cinema Blend, it has been revealed that the next film based on the 1970s saga won't be Neill Blomkamp's "Alien," but rather the sequel to Ridley Scott's film starring Michael Fassbender.

A source told Bloody-Disgusting that, while Neill Blomkamp's "Alien" sequel is totally happening, it's not the following movie in the list when it comes to the franchise, and this may result in "Alien 5" being delayed for a while longer as it steps out of the picture for the time being, while "Prometheus 2" goes into production.

"Alien 5 is still very much in the works, as Fox remains hot on the idea," said the source, speaking about Neill Blomkamp's "Alien" movie. "Blomkamp continues to work on the script (only an outline existed previously) and refine the tale he is telling. Ridley Scott is still producing, but has insisted on Prometheus 2 being made first."

Coming Soon reports that this whole thing could push "Alien 5" back for at least a year after its scheduled 2017 release, but on the other hand it would give Blomkamp time to finish up the script just the way he wants it, besides leaving Weaver to fulfill her commitment to James Cameron's new "Avatar" movies.

There's no confirmation on new dates for Neill Blomkamp's "Alien" sequel yet.
