Emma Watson calls for gender equality in fashion because this industry, like many, has a long way to go when it comes to bringing solidarity and respect to each gender. Emma is a stunner all the way around-she's beautiful, she's fashionable, and she's crazy smart. She believes in making the world a better place and using her platform for good, and she's merging all her talents and experiences together in her latest campaign, HeForShe.
The campaign focuses on gender equality, especially in the fashion industry. Causes like better paternity and maternity leave, body diversity, and inclusive representation in fashion are the focus of the campaign and a new promotional Vougue UK video "Fashion on Gender Equality: A Conversation with Emma Watson."
"Last September I launched a campaign at the UN in New York called HeForShe, which is about men coming in support of women and women supporting men to achieve gender equality," the UN Women Global Goodwill ambassador said. "I have seen some very positive steps toward equality in the industry. But I think there's a lot of racism, there's a lot of sexism. I'd really, really love to see a more diverse representation of women and men in any way that makes them feel empowered."
In the video, Watson consults heavyweight designers, like Stella McCartney, Jonathan Saunders and Erdem Moralioglu, about the current state of gender inequality in fashion and what can be done. Watson asks them the hard questions, like "Are you a feminist?" and "What are the biggest challenges facing women in fashion today?"
Pretty tough questions for the leaders of the industry. "I think the fashion industry has a very big role to play," McCartney said."It has a huge voice and the voice can be adapted. We need to give a better message to women of all ages, all sizes and all nationalities. We need to allow women to feel comfortable in who they are."
