Who would've thought that a movie about the children of Disney villains would be such a hit?
Disney did. The hit movie 'Descendants' featuring Maleficent's purple-haired daughter Mal (Dove Cameron) and her gang of misunderstood friends has just premiered on Disney Channel and took in a staggering 6.6 million viewers on Friday night.
According to Deadline, 'Descendants' also drew in 1.4 million views on the WATCH Disney Channel app, making a grand total of 8 million views since its premiere.
'Descendants' is directed by 'High School Musical' helmer Kenny Ortega and follows the teenaged children of Maleficent (Kristin Chenoweth), Cruella De Vil (Wendy Raquel Robinson), Jafar (Maz Jobrani) and the Evil Queen (Kathy Najimy) as they try to deal with the pressure of being a villain's offspring and saving the heroes from their parents' evil schemes.
The film was such a huge hit that fans are already clamoring for a sequel, especially since Mal's last look at the audience suggested that her story is not yet over. TV Line spoke to Kenny Ortega, who admitted that he would be interested in doing 'Descendants 2.'
"We begin with Mal welcoming us into her story, and Mal's story isn't over - there's a bigger story," Ortega said. "Whether we get to do a sequel or not, that's in the hands of the audience, but Mal's story is definitely bigger."
In case Ortega isn't sure how to proceed with the 'Descendants' sequel, he can always get help from star Dove Cameron, who already has an idea for Part Two. "I have it all laid out," she said. "But we know as much as anyone else, honestly."
Boo Boo Stewart, who plays Jafar's son Jay, predicts that 'Descendants' has the potential of becoming a franchise. "I feel like people are expecting it," he said. "They think this is just the first [of several movies]."
There is no word yet on whether a 'Descendants' sequel will be made.
