Maternal Health Care Project Implemented In Upper West

A project called Community Benefits Health is targeted to enhance maternal health care in the community through distributing important health information about pregnancy and childbirth. With the aid of posters, peer educators, radio, videos and dramas, communities' maternal health care will be improved.

CBH utilizes non-monetary incentives to advocate support for pregnant women. The project aims not just to reach out the individual women but also the people surrounding them like their husbands and in-laws. Influential personalities in the community will also be briefed.

The CBH is now being implemented in the three districts of the Upper West Region. With the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the project is being realized in Wa West, Lambussie and Jirapa districts involving 34 communities.

A borehole as a source of clean water and an emergency transport system were provided as an initial action. Men and chiefs of the community were made to appreciate the significance of their roles in assisting their pregnant partners. They will be educated and loaded with helpful info like obtaining skilled delivery and postnatal care.

The CBH program gives special attention to motivating women to seek four antenatal visits starting in the early stage of their pregnancy. Though important, this important measures are not usually observed by people in the developing countries which pose risks to their unborn child.

Senior Manager of the CBH program states that the main goal is not just to provide assistance to these communities but to change the attitude and view of the whole community towards pregnancy so they themselves will do their parts. The villages already showed progress in two of the three key targets.

The CBH of USA's Concern Worldwide is one of the five projects prepared to be implemented for the people living in Kenya, Ghana and Sierra Leone.
