Salmonella poisoning can cause serious and possibly fatal infections, particularly in young children and the elderly. Salmonella infection symptoms include fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea for 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated food. Most people recover after four to seven days, even without treatment.
According to WebMD, "Some people develop severe diarrhea and need hospital care. Rarely, salmonella bacteria escape the gut and enter the blood, where they spread to other parts of the body. Such infections can be fatal if not treated promptly with antibiotics."
