July 5th marks the christening of Princess Charlotte, who was born on May 2. In a historical celebration of this Royal occasion, Royal Mint presented the commemorative Princess Charlotte silver coin.
E! Online reports that as the Royal Family celebrates the christening of the 2-month-old daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, a new £5 coin has been released in silver to commemorate the event.
This commemorative coin tradition was passed on by Queen Victoria in baptisms of every royal baby. The coin symbolizes good health and prosperity which will then be blessed by the child's hands.
With harp-playing cherubims on each sides, a text was engraved in Lily font that reads, "To celebrate the christening of Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge 2015."
"These coins will be a fitting addition to The Royal Mint's long tradition of creating works of art to celebrate landmark events in the history of the Royal family," stated Royal Mint's director of commemorative coin and medals, Shane Bissett. "It is entirely appropriate that we commemorate this significant occasion with the release of a special coin, just as we celebrated the christening of Prince George."
Royal mint sold a £5 silver coin in commemoration of the birth of Prince George on July 23, 2013 for £80 in silver, with an image of "the definitive Sovereign," St. George and a dragon engraved on the metal.
Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby will baptize Princess Charlotte at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in the Queen's estate at Sandringham in Norfolk on Sunday. Official event photographs will be taken by renowned photographer, Mario Testino.
"I am overwhelmed and honoured to be chosen to document this occasion and to carry on the documentation of the family that is the soul of this country, a country that has given me so much," Testino said in a press release.
Testino was also known for The Royal Engagement photos of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2010.
