Reigning Masters champion Jordan Spieth bagged his second major golf tournament of the year after winning this year's US open at Chambers Bay in heart stopping fashion.
A see-saw final three holes saw Spieth and second place finisher Dustin Johnson locked in a tense back and forth duel.
It seemed The 21 year old Spieth was cruising to the trophy following a highlight reel 25 foot birdie putt on the 16th hole. However, he squandered his three shot lead with a double bogey on the next hole opening the door for Johnson to steal the cup.
Unfortunately for Johnson, he couldn't capitalize on Spieth's mistakes. The 30 year old veteran missed both the match winning eagle putt from 12 feet out and the playoff salvaging 4 foot birdie putts on the 18th hole to leave him an agonizing one stroke short of his first major title. He finished tied for second with South African Louis Oosthuizen at -4 under par for the tournament.
"I tried my damnedest to get in the hole and I just couldn't do it," Johnson said.
Speith's first US open win catapults him into rarefied air among the sport's elite. At 21 years of age, The Texas native is now the youngest golfer to hold both a Masters Green Jacket and US open crown. He's also one of just six golfers to win both the Masters and US open in the same year, joining an exclusive list that includes golf legends like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods.
"I'm still in shock," Spieth told reporters after the final round. "I've never experienced a feeling like this. It was a very intense back nine."
Spieth now has his sights set on becoming the first grand slam winner in Golf's modern era. His pursuit of the achievement continues next month at the British Open in St. Andrews.
