Carrot Beer: Australia's Newest Craft Beer

A healthier kind of craft beer is brewing in Australia.

Carrot beer is the newest vegetable-based beer, containing 16% of carrot juice, available in bars in Northern Australia.

The Wabbit Season beer is distributed by 4 Hearts Brewing Company in Ipshwich. 4 Hearts partnered with local farmer Richard Gorman, who provided all the carrots in developing the initial 1,200 liters of carrot beer. Their newest brew is also available at the 4 Hearts Brewery Pumpyard.

Craft brewer Wade Curtis thought of this idea while visiting Gorman's partly-owned farm, Kalfresh. Curtis shared this light bulb moment to ABC saying, "I saw the carrots and I thought 'it's a vegetable, it's got sugar, it can be converted to alcohol, wouldn't it be great to pair with beer?'"

"Not only do we love carrots, we also like a beer every now and again," Curtis told ABC. "Mixing those two together was just the perfect combination."

Mashable released Curtis' statement in an email saying that the process of brewing fruits like pumpkin and beetroot is done the same with carrots. This is good news for health-conscious beer-drinkers, although Curtis has not really identified the nutritional content of the brew. "Carrots add the colour and earthiness to the beer. The vitamins from the carrot would also remain but we haven't tested the beer to see how much."

According to Huffington Post, this carrot beer looks just like the orange soda, Fanta, only with a distinctive strong carrot taste.

This beer containing fermented carrot juice has set itself different from Short's Brewery's carrot cake-flavored beer in Michigan, and Dogfish Head's "Wild Carrot Seed Ale" in Delaware, which does not really include the regular supermarket carrot in its content.

Unlike fruit-based craft beers containing pumpkin, cucumber, strawberry, jalapeño, and grape juices, a vegetable brew like carrot beer is rare in the alcohol market.
