Employees Say Nasty Gal Environment Is 'Horrible'

Online clothing retailer Nasty Gal is recently facing a lawsuit filed by former employees. Allegations say the company is "a horrible place to work" for expectant mothers. Not only that, they're also involved in a discrimination lawsuit.

Marketing specialist Etalia Gold was an employee of Nasty Gal for almost a year when she broke the news to her bosses of her pregnancy in March last year.

All the other employees were so filled with joy about the news that they decided to host a baby shower luncheon for Gold's last day on August 29.

Unfortunately, her superiors didn't seem as excited about the pregnancy. Just a day prior to the shower, the marketing specialist was informed that the company was letting her go.

The termination also meant that Gold would be disinheriting her health insurance on September 1st. Etalia was 36 weeks pregnant when she had to collect her things from her desk to leave the company.

Nasty Gal was soon under the spotlight for unfavorable reasons on Tuesday. Jezebel first reported that a former employee had sued the clothing company with claims that she was fired for her pregnancy.

Aimee Concepcion filed the lawsuit in March at the Los Angeles Superior Court. Documents say that the company illegally fired employees on three instances when they became pregnant, including Etalia Gold.

It also stated that Nasty Gal neglected to offer these pregnant employees with a four-month paid maternity leave, as required by the laws of California. The lawsuit also claims that the company performed a similar occurrence with a male employee who was going to take paternity leave.

The lawsuit stated, "Nasty Gal has shown itself to be a horrible place to work for professional women who become pregnant."

A spokesperson for the company denied the accusations when speaking to BuzzFeed. "The accusations made in the lawsuits are false, defamatory and taken completely out of context."

"The layoffs in question were part of a larger restructuring of departments we completed over nine months ago. The lawsuits are frivolous and without merit," the spokesperson continued.
