NCAA Basketball Rule Changes: Women’s College Basketball Changes Might Completely Switch Sport

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the non-profit body that regulates the way college sports happen, and it has recently released a new set of NCAA basketball rule changes for both the men's and women's games - and some of these may actually change the way the sport is played in the courts.

According to Testudo Times, arguably the biggest of the NCAA basketball rule changes actually involves the women's teams, as now they will be taking off the 20-minute half and changing it for a 10-minute quarter, which will make the college version of the sport look a lot like the WNBA and FIBA.

ESPN reports that the NCAA basketball rule changes for the women's teams came last Monday, when the NCAA oversight panel approved a new series of modifications following recommendations of the women's rules committee, after they submitted them in May.

The new NCAA basketball rule changes sees that timeouts will be one per quarter, taking place following the first dead ball occurring past the 5-minute mark, but, if one of the teams asks for the timeout before the 5-minute mark, it'll be considered a media stoppage.

Other rulings include that team would receive two-shot bonus after the opposing team has committed five fouls in each quarter, and the number carries out even if the game goes into overtime.

As for the NCAA basketball rule changes in the men's team, the biggest one is the new effort to boost scoring in the games, according to The Washington Post, as they've now cut the clock short in the game by five seconds, from 35 to 30, which marks the first time this happens since the 1993-94 season that saw it shortened from 45 to 35 seconds over two decades ago.

The reasoning behind the new shot clock NCAA basketball rule changes is that, after a trial during the postseason tournaments of CIT, CBI and NIT, teams who followed this scored approximately 5.6 more points that their opponents.
