2015 Tony Awards: Special + Other Awards

This year's 69th annual Tony Awards overcame high expectations. There's already been a rundown of the nominees and winners for both play and musical categories.

This time around, take a look at the honorees for special awards, as well as nominees and winners for other awards that don't fall under the play or musical genres at the 2015 Tony Awards.

There was a presented award for Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre. Nominees included "The Last Ship" with Sting's music and lyrics, "Something Rotten!" with music and lyrics by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick, "The Visit" with John Kander's music and Fred Ebb's lyrics, and the category winner, "Fun Home" with music by Jeanine Tesori and lyrics by Lisa Kron.

Theatre is never complete without good choreography. Joshua Bergasse for "On the Town," and Christopher Gattelli for "The King and I" were both nominated for Best Choreography.

Additionally, Scott Graham and Steven Hoggett for Frantic Assembly for "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time," and Casey Nicholaw for "Something Rotten!" were also nominated for the same award. However, Christopher Wheeldon eventually won the award for lending his talents to "An American in Paris."

Christopher Austin, Don Sebesky, and Bill Elliot won the Best Orchestration award for "An American in Paris." The trio beat fellow nominees John Clancy for "Fun Home," Rob Mathes for "The Last Ship," and Larry Hochman for "Something Rotten!"

Special awards were given to honorees during the gala as well. Tommy Tune was given the Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre. Tune is currently celebrating is golden decade on the American theatrical stage. Tommy Tune has garnered nine Tony Awards, The National Medal of Arts, eight Drama Desk Awards, three Astraire Awards, among many others.

The Special Tony Award was given to John Cameron Mitchell for his resurgence in "Hedwig and the Angry Inch." On the other hand, the Cleveland Play House in Cleveleand, Ohio received the Regional Theatre Award.

Stephen Schwartz accepted the Isabelle Stevenson Award while the Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre award was handed to scenery designer and painter Arnold Abramson, press agent Adrian Bryan-Brown, and Hudson Scenic Studio founder Gene O'Donovan.

The 2015 Tony Awards was on Sunday, June 7th. It was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Hosted by Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming, the gala's live broadcast was aired on CBS.
