'Spy Kids' Robert Rodriguez Confirmed for 'Jonny Quest' Movie

The live action film adaptation of 'Jonny Quest' has been kicked around for several years. Although there were reports that '50 First Dates' director Peter Segal was already developing the film, the project never came into fruition.

It looks like the film will finally be taking a different course. Hollywood Reporter has just announced that 'Spy Kids' director Robert Rodriguez will work on the movie.

Rodriguez will also be writing the script together with Terry Rossio, who has previously worked on the screenplay for films like 'The Mask of Zorro' and the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie series.

Adrian Askarieth and Dan Lin have also been confirmed to produce the adaptation.

'Jonny Quest' was one of the most popular Hanna-Barbera animated series. Although it was released in 1964, it generated enough cult following to spawn a sequel, 'The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest.' Both series starred a young boy who follows his scientist father in several adventures. His team consists of his adoptive brother Hadji, his bodyguard Race Bannon and their dog Bandit.

Segal's planned adaptation of 'Jonny Quest' was slated to star Zac Efron in the lead role and Dwayne Johnson as Bannon. There were no confirmations whether the actors will be cast in Rodriguez's film.

Rodriguez's directorial debut was the highly acclaimed action flick 'El Mariachi.' He also directed the sequels 'Desperado' and 'Once Upon a Time in Mexico.' The director has worked on several action films like 'Sin City,' 'Planet Terror' and 'Machete.' His most recent project was the 2014 sequel 'Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.'

In addition to his action films, the director also worked on the family flicks like the 'Spy Kids' movie series. He also directed 'The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D' which starred a young Taylor Lautner. Rodriguez's most recent family film was the 3D comedy 'Shorts.'
