George Clooney's 'Tomorrowland' Barely Defeats Anna Kendrick's 'Pitch Perfect 2' At the Box Office

The Memorial Day weekend has been slow for Walt Disney's 'Tomorrowland,' but it still managed to overtake the comedy musical 'Pitch Perfect 2' after three days of box office sales.

According to Rentrak, the George Clooney movie has earned around $32.2 million in North America. This is a disappointing start in the effort to win back its $190 million budget.

'Tomorrowland' stars Clooney as Frank Walker, a former child genius who must help a young girl (Britt Robertson) as they navigate a strange alternate dimension. The film also stars Hugh Laurie as David Nix and Tim McGraw as Eddie Newton. The movie is directed by Brad Bird, who is best known for animated films like 'The Incredibles' and 'Ratatouille.'

Anna Kendrick's sequel to the 2012 film has made $30.3 million in its second weekend, making a total of $117.8 in only two weeks. It marks the return of the Barden Bellas, which consists of Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Brittany Snow. Elizabeth Banks, who also stars in the movie, comes back to produce and direct the sequel.

The action film 'Mad Max: Fury Road' is also doing well for its second weekend, earning $23.9 million. The movie, which stars Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy and Nicholas Hoult, has made a total of $87.3 million since its May 15 release.

Gil Kenan's reboot of the classic horror film 'Poltergeist' got a modest start at $23 million in the US and Canada. The remake stars Sam Rockwell as the distraught father of a little girl who has been abducted by strange entities in their home.

The Marvel blockbuster 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' is still going strong in the domestic box office. Although it only made $20.9 million during the Memorial Day Weekend, this adds to its total earnings of a staggering $404.1 million in North America alone.
