While Russell Brand's ex isn't exactly known for her strong political stands, if one thing is true is that Katy Perry's dresses over the years have gathered a lot of attention, though certainly not nearly as much as Lady Gaga; however, her latest outfit at a concert might get her banned from China.
Style and Katy Perry's dresses have often been the pop star's signature, as well as increasingly crazier-looking hair, having gone through a series of styles over the years - but now, it looks like she may have gone a step too far with her outfits, supporting a cause that the Chinese government is very much against.
According to Billboard, during a show in Taipei, China, one of Katy Perry's dresses for the night became the subject of national controversy in the Asian nation after, following one of her many outfit changes, the "Dark Hose" singer wore a gown that has been considered as fully in support of the Taiwan cause.
Vanity Fair reports that Katy Perry's dress, a bright and glossy sunflower gown, has been caught in a whirlwind of controversy due to the fact that the flower is also the symbol in the Sunflower Student Movement, a protest movement from 2014 in pro of Taiwanese independence.
According to E! Online, though, the controversy didn't end with Katy Perry's dress: the singer also wore the Republic of China (Taiwan) flag as a cape while she was singing her hit "Unconditionally," prompting eyebrows to raise across the Asian nation.
CNBC reports that, while China officials have wondered about the appropriateness of the singer's outfit (even going so far as to prevent the story of the dress from reaching broad media), Perry has been dubbed the "Sunflower Goddess" by Taiwanese media in wide support of the controversial dress.
After her concert, the singer has made no official comments about the intent behind the Katy Perry dress.
