Schoolgirl’s Blog Leads to Better Lunches

Sometimes it seems like a lot of what gets spewed into the blogosphere is a bunch of self-important drivel, like, “These are the random thoughts in my head that I assume everyone in the universe will find riveting.” Or “Here’s an account of every moment of my day.”

Every once in a while, though, you find something valuable, as is the case with nine-year-old Martha Payne’s online writings. Her blog, NeverSeconds, was about school lunches. According to Grist, she takes photos of the food, and then rates each meal on taste, healthiness, and pieces of hair. She also notes the price and how many mouthfuls she takes of the meal.

Originally, the lunches at Payne’s school in Scotland were not very healthy (even if you count hair follicles as protein). Lack of quantity was an ocassional problem, too. When her accounts started getting media attention – even from famous, health-conscious chef Jamie Oliver! – the local council decided to allow unlimited salad, bread, and fruit during the mid-day meal. Now, the health ratings are much higher.

Other school-aged kids write into the blog to share pictures and accounts of their lunch experiences. Hopefully the middle school cafeteria is getting ready for Martha soon!
