‘Sherlock’ Special Episode 2015: Benedict Cumberbatch And Martin Freeman To Solve Crimes In Victorian England On BBC! [PHOTOS]

In the last weeks of the year 2015, pictures of the shooting of the Christmas episode of the cult BBC series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were shown to fans, and everyone was shocked to see the actors' attire, as it's a show set in modern London - but now, it has been revealed that the "Sherlock" special episode of 2015 will actually be set in Victorian England.

Of course, that's the original setting of the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, as written by sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the late 19th century to early 20th one - but fans were definitely not expecting the "Sherlock" special episode in 2015 to be a throwback to the past.

According to BBC News, the revelation about the "Sherlock" special episode of 2015 came from the mouth of one of its co-creators, Steven Moffat (responsible for the show along with Mark Gatiss, who also plays Sherlock's brother Mycroft in the series), as he was asked about the confusing set pictures.

The interview in question was recently released in Entertainment Weekly, where Moffat revealed that the "Sherlock" special episode of 2015 was going to be a stand-alone thing, not following the series' canon, but rather throwing the same characters into their natural space: Victorian London.

Pictures of Cumberbatch, Freeman and Amanda Abbington (who plays Watson's wife Mary and is the real-life partner of the actor) in full 19th century costumes have been going around the web for the past few months, which would confirm that at least the three of them are set to appear on the "Sherlock" special episode of 2015.

"We wouldn't have done the story we're doing, and the way we're doing it, if we didn't have this special," Moffat said during the SXSW festival, according to The Independent. "It's not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it - as we could hardly conceal - it's Victorian. Mark Gatiss and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be a separate entity. It's kind of in its own little bubble."

There's still no date announced for the "Sherlock" special episode of 2015, but fans of the BBC show (which airs on PBS in the United States) have come to assume it's to be a Christmas or New Year's special.
