Enriching Experiences on New Art and Sustainability Exploration by Seven Directions Tours

Deeply personal and profound experiences are usually the impetus for change in a person’s life. These are the moments that transform and unlock inner potential. Seven Directions New Mexico tours are unique because of the level of personal engagement that is involved in visiting and interacting with luminary artists and high desert natives who live in a meaningful relationship with their environment. Their latest tour, which runs from July 20-28, takes guests on a one-of-a-kind art and eco-awareness journey through New Mexico. To call this latest program a tour is an injustice. It’s an authentic experience that impacts people for the rest of their lives.

Patrizia Antonicelli, owner and manager of Seven Directions LLC explains, “Our tours are much more than entertainment and learning about eco-friendly practices and other cultures. They provide the framework by which guests experience the art and sustainability of the beautiful Southwest, not just with their eyes and ears, but with their heart and soul.

“I’ve had many clients tell me the experience changed the way they lived their lives. The people they encountered and places they visited caused them to see the world through an entirely different lens. It changed their perspective about the world and themselves. It’s those types of stories I hear that tell me we’re impacting people and making a difference.” Antonicelli went on to say it’s the connection between people, places and purpose that provide the authentic experience.
The 10-day tour takes guests through various parts of Northern New Mexico, including Santa Fe. One of the highlights is a daylong excursion with the world-renowned Bioneers (the word comes from a combination of terms: biology + pioneers) who are known for their innovative solutions to address the earth’s environmental and social issues. By experiencing the lifestyles of people who live cooperatively with nature and one another, guests will gain insight into the shared humanity, in contrast with the dominant competitive model that most of the people know, which brings about depleted resources, both natural and interpersonal. This is the foundation of the Native American approach - to take the long view to protect the next seven generations - and New Mexico lies at the heart of this ancient wisdom.

Guests will also be inspired and amazed by a visit to the land art architectural sculpture StarAxis, approximately 80 miles outside of Santa Fe. Famed artist and StarAxis creator Charles Ross conceived the idea for StarAxis in 1971. The earthwork is on an Egyptian scale and includes a fascinating solar pyramid. Guests will be allowed to go inside the pyramid and view an entire hour of the earth’s rotation.

The central component of StarAxis is the star tunnel, which is literally cut into the side of the mesa along with an ascending 60-meter staircase in perfect alignment with the earth’s axis. As each visitor ascends the stairs, they are able to pass through over 25,000 years of the earth’s history with the stars. Ross explains, “Each element of Star Axis, every shape, every measure, every angle, was first discovered by astronomical observation and then brought down into the land – star geometry anchored in earth and rock.” After the tour, guests will have the opportunity to discuss the sculpture with creator Charles Ross.
