IBM Releases Its Newest Mainframe Computer; The IBM Z13

For many tech experts and critics, mainframe computers are already a thing of the past especially in today's world where more powerful mobile and compact computers are on the rise, some even say that the great mainframe computer manufacturer IBM should just reposition its market somewhere else. However, based on their latest release, IBM may have more tricks up on its sleeve and unveils its newest mainframe computer, the IBM Z13. Considering this new release, IBM may be sending messages to other tech companies that mainframe computing is still relevant today.

Google may have pointed out that the use of scale-out computing wherein a series of cheap interconnected computers are networked in order to divide the task amongst itself can beat the mainframe type of computing. However, there are some tasks that just need workhorse performance like processing bank transactions. nt fact the world's largest credit card company Visa still uses mainframe computers in handling their transaction processes.

The newest IBM Z13 runs using the fastest available computers in the world and can achieve computing power of up to 32,000 transactions per second. According to IBM, the Z13 has more than 500 new patents inside it, costs more than $1 billion in investment while working with more than 60 clients and was under development for five years. IBM also stated that the Z13 can process 2.5 billion transactions per day.

Right now the biggest dilemma for IBM is whether their new mainframe can keep up with mobile or cloud computing. For financial institutions or companies that has already relied much of their computing needs to a mainframe computer, IBM Z13 is just the best option right now. Right now the price for a new IBM Z13 computer depends on the mainframes configuration; however the previous incarnation of the computer costs as much as $1 million.
