Washington D.C kitchen superstar José Andrés hits the street with a new mobile eatery called Pepe.
A silver food truck Pepe, which is also a nickname for José, was launched this Tuesday and it will serve Washington and host private events with Andres' company ThinkFoodGroup.
Pepe features Spanish baguette sandwiches (flautas) stuffed with beef tenderloin, blue cheese, pork patties, and coveted ibérico ham. It serves not only sandwiches, soups, fried chickens, pork burgers, but also patatas bravas, fried potato chips, veggie options, sweet desserts, and non-alcoholic cocktails.
At a press preview this week, Andrés showed his passion for the new business: "I think every chef should have a food truck. It's a good way to test the markets, to invest in meeting the future restaurant goers."
Prices at Pepe are higher than what one would expect for food truck fare. They range from $8-11 for sandwiches, but $14 for Pepito de Ternera, $15 for Red Hook's lobster roll, and $20 for the Pepito de Iberico. For dessert, there is a classic ice cream sandwich filled with hazelnut ice cream for $5.
