Edward Herrmann Dead: ‘Gilmore Girls’ Granddad Loses Cancer Battle At Age 71

It's a sad bit of news for fans of dramedy series "Gilmore Girls" starring Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, as the man who played patriarch Richard Gilmore has passed away age 71, after a long career in television and movies that went on throughout decades, working with some of the world's biggest names.

Fans of "Gilmore Girls" and different other projects in films and television around the world are saddened to hear news that Edward Herrmann is dead at 71, following a long battle with brain cancer which the actor ultimately lost.

According to United Kingdom news outlet The Independent, news that Edward Herrmann's dead first came out on New Year's Day 2015, after the actor's manager gave a statement to the press regarding the health and progress of the beloved actor.

"Besides being an accomplished actor, he was also a true gentleman and a scholar, as well as being incredibly kind and decent man," manager Robbie Kass stated after the actor's New York death. "He will be sorely missed."

Besides his stint as Lorelai's father and Rory's grandfather in the beloved WB show that went on from 2000 to 2007, Herrmann was also known for having played Franklin Delano Roosevelt, first in the 70s television movies "Eleanor and Franklin" and "Eleanor and Franklin: The Whitehouse Years" and then reprising his role in the original film adaptation of the musical "Annie," according to the BBC.

After news that Edward Herrmann's dead, it was revealed that apparently playing the iconic American president was his favorite role, according to son Rory.

He was nominated for a total of five Primetime Emmy Awards over the course of his career, winning for his last nod, as a guest actor in the popular ABC 90s courtroom drama "The Practice."

Having worked with people as famous and talented as the Coen brothers (in the George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones screwball comedy "Intolerable Cruelty"), his more recent television appearances include guest roles in hit shows like "The Good Wife," "Grey's Anatomy" and even the last season of sitcom "How I Met Your Mother," according to The Telegraph.

News that Edward Herrmann's dead has traveled the world and saddened people all over, as many say farewell to the beloved character actor.
