GM Issues Recall Of Vehicles Due To Ignition System Problem

The curse of the ignition switch problem has continued to plague major car manufacturer General Motors Co. GM opened up its 2015 by a statement saying that three more vehicles will be recalled due to the same problem that has saw the company recalled millions of its vehicles last 2014.

83,572 units of sports utility vehicle and pickup trucks were recovered during the last recall; fortunately no related injuries were reported due to the vehicles defects. The main problems originated form an ignition lock actuator with its outer diameter exceeding the prescribed specifications. It might not be that critical to some, but it could bring major scare to some consumers and also to investors.

Following the company's declaration of bankruptcy last 2009; GM is still struggling to get its ball rolling. Unfortunately recent vehicle defects have greatly affected the company's once glorious and irrefutable reputation. The recent problems that GM has encountered saw its overall share price drop by almost 14.6% in the last year, while its closest rival Ford Motor Company's share prices rose by about 0.5%.

GM recalled almost 2.5 million defective vehicles in the last year. The recall was in response to a number of accidents that cost more than 40 people their lives and injuring many more. In the compensation program created by GM to cater to its clients, more than 2,200 claims were filed; this includes deaths and injuries relating to GM's defective vehicles.

The latest issue on GM's ignition locks was discovered after an internal quality review. The defect was detected on some Chevrolet Silverado light and heavy duty pick-up trucks. Selected batch of Avalanche, Tahoe and Suburban were also reported to have been affected. Other affected vehicle are as follows; GMC Sierra light and heavy duty pick-up trucks; Yukon and Yukon XL; Cadillac Escalade, Escalade EXT and Escalade ESV. The problem affects models released from 2011 up to 2012. Vehicles repaired between 2007-2014 were also affected because they may have been repaired using defective part.
