Yiwu Factories: The Place Where Christmas Decorations Came From

The city of Yiwu is known for having red factories that produce Christmas decorations that was being distributed around the world.

According to the reports of Sina News, Yiwu is just a couple of hours from south of Shanghai by fast train and it is known for being the massive Christmas market in China. Since 2001, the production for Christmas decoration had grown from 10 factories to more than 600. 60 percent of the Christmas decorations in the world and 90 percent in China were produced in Yiwu.

According to Cai Qinglian, Yiwu Christmas Products Industry Association Vice-Chairman, the orders are not that good or too bad, even though the orders from foreign customers decreases, the orders from national customers have gone up.

According to Wei, a 19 years old factory worker, he knows that Christmas is a festival, but he does not know what Christmas is all about, he also added that he thinks of Christmas as a Chinese New Year for foreigners. Wei  and his parents are from the province of Guizhou and they came to Yiwu last spring after their friends told them about the factory job that can help them produce 4,000 RMB.

Wei and his father work for 10 hours a day and they earned 3,000 RMB a month for producing plastic snowflakes. During working hours, Wei and his father need to use 10 face masks per day so they would not breathe in the red powder used in producing the Christmas decorations.

Even though they always wears a Christmas hat at work, Wei's father does not have any intention of celebrating Christmas. He wears a Christmas hat to protect his hair from having red dust. Aside from their hair, they also need to cover themselves from head to toe during working hours to protect them from the red dust.

According to Wei's father, their job at the factory is very tiring and they would not probably do it again next year. After they finish saving money for Wei's wedding, they will come back to their home.
