Panera Bread is discontinuing its high-caffeine "Charged" drinks amidst allegations of fatalities and health issues. Find out why these beverages are causing a stir and what's next for the popular bakery-cafe chain.

Beverage Buzzkill

Panera Bread has announced it's pulling the plug on its controversial "Charged" line of caffeinated drinks. This move comes after two wrongful death lawsuits and an allegation by a customer of heart problems, all linked to the consumption of these amped-up beverages. The decision to ditch the Charged drink line shows a deep concern about the over-consumption of stimulants in soft drinks.

Juice Jitters

The Charged drinks have been the subject of intense scrutiny due to their seriously high caffeine content. A large Charged Lemonade packs a whopping 390 milligrams of caffeine, nearly matching the FDA's recommended daily limit of 400 milligrams for healthy adults. One of the issues may have been that Panera added the Charged line to its all-you-can-drink Sips Club subscription service, which allowed consumers to imbibe these zippy soft drinks with impunity, getting huge doses of caffeine. With reports of deaths and adverse health effects, Panera faced mounting pressure to address concerns over the safety of these potent potables.

Key to Moderation

While caffeine is generally safe in moderate amounts, overconsumption can lead to adverse consequences. Rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, and even cardiac arrests are among the potential risks associated with excessive intake. As the lawsuits allege, the Charged drinks may have pushed some consumers beyond their tolerance levels, with tragic results.

New Brew on the Horizon

Panera's decision to discontinue the Charged line coincides with a broader menu revamp, promising new low-sugar and low-caffeine beverage options. Blueberry lavender lemonade and pomegranate hibiscus tea are set to grace the menu, catering to those seeking refreshment without the risk of an energized overload. As Panera adapts to consumer worries, moderation appears to be their new mantra.
