Are More 'Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' Movies Coming?

Could Lisbeth Salander be returning to the big screen? The steely, punk rock hacker of Stieg Larsson's best-selling Millennium trilogy book series was last seen in theatres in 2011, when prolific auteur David Fincher and actress Rooney Mara brought the character to life in their Hollywood adaptation of the first novel, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

The remaining novels, The Girl Who Played with Fire and the Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, have yet to be adapted by American filmmakers. That pegs the question, could there be a possibility of Fincher and Mara finishing what they started? Rumors regarding the fate of the trilogy have swirled around Hollywood for years, but no news of a concrete sequel has materialized.

In a recent interview with Cinema Blend, Mara spoke of her desire to revisit the character. She said:

'I think that was just a rumor. I don't get any updates on that. I would love to continue playing that part. It's something I've really wanted to do now for the last three years, or however long it has been. I just don't know, it's been so long now. I really, really, really would still love to do it. But I've had to come to peace with the fact that I probably won't.'

The role was a high point for Mara's then blossoming career. Her turn as Lisbeth bagged her a best actress Oscar nomination and catapulted her to the upper ranks of Hollywood's leading ladies.

As a whole, the film was favorably received by critics, earning a 71 out of 100 on review aggregator metacritic, but it did feel a little redundant given the fact that an already excellent Swedish made film adaptation of the books was created just a few years ago.

Still, it would be nice to see Mara step into the role once again.
