Who Were the Big Winners from Last Night's Primetime Emmy Awards?

Last night, TV's best and brightest gathered to celebrate the 67th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Both the comedy and drama fields were stacked with big name contenders. But as is the case at award shows, only one can take home the prize. Here's a rundown of the big winners in the major categories.

The Outstanding Drama Series award went to HBO's fantasy epic Game of Thrones. The show has long been one of TV's most popular, now it can truly claim to be one of its best. It staved off completion from AMC's Mad Men, which was the bookie's favorite going into the night. The 60's period drama was looking to cap off its triumphant seven season run with a record fifth best drama trophy, but it looks like voters had other ideas.

The show did get some consolation however, as leading man Jon Hamm finally broke his Emmy's curse. The perennial bridesmaid of the best actor in a drama category finally had his moment, trumping the likes of Kevin Spacey and Jeff Daniels to secure his first win.

His counterpart in the actress category was How to Get Away with Murder's Viola Davis. The star of the latest Shonda Rhimes smash hit was the victor in a loaded field that featured critical darling, Tatiana Maslany of the clone-conspiracy drama Orphan Black and Taraji P. Henson of Fox's hip-hop drama Empire.

On the comedy side of things, HBO's VEEP dominated the proceedings. The political satire took home outstanding comedy series while leading lady Julia-Louis Dreyfus snapped up the best actress trophy. Her co-star Tony Hale was named best supporting actor as well.

Jeffrey Tambor was named best actor in a comedy for his role as a transgender woman in Amazon's much loved dramedy Transparent.

The full list of winners can be seen on the official Emmy's website.
