It looks like the box office battle between DC and Marvel is starting to heat up. Next year's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is DC and Warner Brothers most ambitious undertaking yet, and director Zack Snyder wants you to know it.
He feels that the gravitas that comes with these iconic superheroes will make them immune to the viewer fatigue that some say is setting into the genre. Fellow director Steven Spielberg sparked some debate earlier in the week when he said that superhero films may soon fade into obscurity like the once popular Westerns of yore.
Snyder responded, telling The Daily Beast:
"It goes to the mythological nature of the movies that we're making, I feel like he's right. But I feel like Batman and Superman are transcendent of superhero movies in a way, because they're Batman and Superman."
His answer also contained a not to subtle jab at Marvel, who have been the dominant force in comic book entertainment as of late:
"They're not just, like, the flavor of the week Ant-Man-not to be mean, but whatever it is. What is the next Blank-Man?"
Overall, Synder believes that DC's roster of heroes and villains are more 'epic' then their Marvel counter parts.
Will he and DC be able to walk the talk? We'll have to wait until next year to find out.
Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice is penciled in for a March 26, 2016 release. Henry Cavill returns as Clark Kent/Superman while Ben Affleck dons the cape and cowl of Batman. The film will also be the first big screen appearance for Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman.
Marvel, not to be outdone, have their own superhero team up next year with Captain America: Civil War set to hit theatres on May 6, 2016.
