HBO's Diversity Problem Needs Tackling Now

Since there is generally a cumulative consciousness with regard to how gay people, people with color and minors are treated in Hollywood, HBO declares their launch for a new fellowship specifically geared towards diversity issues. HBO is now ready to tackle all sensitive issues about diversity right now, according to huffingtonpost.com.

Last Wednesday, February 25, 2015, HBO which presently have hit shows such as Girls, Game of Thrones, Last Week Tonight with Jon Oliver and True Detective, announced that they will find new writers from different backgrounds where they will select participants for a week of master classes, concerning on things such as story development and how to sell their own work, prior to boarding upon an 8-month writing trip paired with a development executive in HBO.

According to theweek.com, HBO has previously come under blaze for the overall whiteness of their programming - Girls and whilst a lot may feel that it is not fair to pin all diversity requisites on a 30-minute program, critics such as Jon Caramanica of The New York Times proclaimed that television is never close enough to diversity, not it its writers, its show runners or in its actors. The issues determined by critics of Girls are traceable and systemic to HBO executives who green light shows and shoot down lots of others.  This is the level where diversity falls or stands, Caramanica added.

An article titled "Why HBO and Other Networks Needs to Pay Attention to Diversity",  written by Bustle, points out that in major shows in HBO and other networks, most of its watchers are white men, even if they assert their shows are intended to everyone. For instance, between 1975 an 2014, thirty eight people created long-hour TV dramas in HBO. Out of that 38 people, 33 were white men, 3 women and a non-white man.

Hence, today more than ever, HBO Talent Development and Programming vice president Kelly Edwards announces a new program that will be called HBOAccess program that will seek for new original and authentic perspective.  Well, let's see how it goes!
