E. coli Outbreak Linked to Organic Walnuts Sold in Bulk

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning consumers about an E. coli outbreak linked to organic walnuts sold in bulk at natural food stores across 19 states.

Recall Issued for Specific Walnuts

The recall specifically targets organic walnut halves and pieces from Gibson Farms, identified by lot codes 3325-043 and 3341-501 with expiration dates between May 21, 2025, and June 7, 2025. These walnuts were primarily sold loose in bulk bins, but some stores may have repackaged them into clamshell containers or bags.

Check Your Pantry, Especially in California and Washington

The CDC is reporting most illnesses so far are in the states of California and Washington. If your walnuts match the information above, throw them away to avoid getting sick. Reference this list from the FDA for a complete list of stores that sold the affected products.

How to Stay Safe

E. coli infection typically causes severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting, but most people recover within a week. Per guidance from the CDC, wash any surfaces or dishes that the contaminated nuts may have touched. For sellers, discard any remaining stock and thoroughly wash any containers or bins in which the nuts were stored in.
