Did you know that a whopping one-third of all food produced globally gets wasted each year? That's according to a recent report by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).  That's perfectly good food that could be nourishing people around the world, yet it ends up rotting in landfills. But there's a silver lining! We can all be part of the solution by taking action right in our own kitchens. In honor of National Stop Food Waste Day, here are 10 easy hacks to slash food waste:

1. Plan Your Meals Like a Pro

Planning your meals for the week is like having a roadmap for grocery shopping. You'll buy only what you need, avoiding impulse purchases that often end up molding in the crisper drawer. Need recipe inspiration? Check out meal planning apps or browse food blogs for delicious, budget-friendly ideas.

2. Master the Art of Leftovers

Leftovers aren't yesterday's news! Get creative with those extra portions. Leftover roasted chicken can be transformed into a delightful salad, while leftover rice becomes the base for a flavorful fried rice or veggie stir-fry. Embrace the power of leftovers, and you'll not only save food but also time in the kitchen!

3. Embrace the "First In, First Out" (FIFO) Method

Run your pantry and fridge like a restaurant kitchen. Older items should be used up first!  Rotating your stock ensures you use everything before it expires. So, shove those new cans of beans to the back and grab the ones that have been patiently waiting their turn.

4. Get to Know Your Freezer

The freezer is your ultimate weapon in the fight against food waste. From fruits and vegetables to cooked meals in portions, the freezer can extend the shelf life of a variety of foods. Just remember to label and date everything - a mystery freezer bag is nobody's friend.

5. Love Your List

Grocery shopping without a list is a recipe for disaster (and wasted food). Before you head to the store, take stock of what you already have and plan your meals accordingly. Sticking to a list prevents impulse buys and ensures you get only what you need for the week.

6. Don't Fear the "Ugly" Produce

A misshapen carrot or an uneven zucchini might not be Instagram-worthy, but that doesn't mean they're any less delicious. Embrace "ugly" produce at the grocery store - it's just as nutritious and often comes at a discount!

7. Befriend Your Fridge Crisper Drawers

Those crisper drawers at the bottom of your fridge aren't just for show. They're designed to regulate humidity and keep fruits and vegetables fresh for longer. Learn which fruits and veggies thrive in the crisper (think leafy greens, herbs, and berries) and which are better off stored at room temperature (like bananas and avocados).

8. Think Twice Before Pitching

Don't toss those vegetable scraps just yet! Carrot peels, broccoli stems, and herb ends can all be used to make delicious homemade vegetable stock. It's a fantastic way to add flavor to soups, stews, and risottos, and it minimizes food waste at the same time.

9. Channel Your Inner Alchemist

Composting is a fantastic way to turn kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich soil addition for your plants. It's a win-win situation! You reduce waste and get amazing fertilizer for your garden.

10. Don't Be Shy About "Use By" Dates

Those "use by" dates on food labels can be confusing.  They often indicate peak quality, not safety. If something smells and looks fine, it's probably still perfectly good to eat. Use your senses and trust your judgment!

By implementing these simple hacks, you can significantly reduce food waste in your kitchen. Remember, every little bit counts!
